Hellz-A-Poppin Across The Hollywood Hills

November 9, 2013

Viewed This Is The End the other night on Blu-Ray.

Once there were only three stooges in Hollywood.  But now, in the 21st century, we have a clown car full of doofuses armed to the teeth with chaotic comedic chops which will squeeze the ever living laughs out of us from both ends. Which brings us to Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill,  Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Michael Cera. Hellz-certainly-a-poppin in their apocalyptic comedy This Is The End.

This self-deprecating romp about Hollywood, fame, acting, and the beginning stages of the male brain’s evolution, takes comedy to the outer limits and dares to step over the fault line. Totally offensive and laugh out loud funny, it might be the closest mainstream Hollywood film we’ve seen in a long time that’s a total stream-of-consciousness, absurdist comedy.

Looking for more good laughs? Where to begin?

Try watching Leo McCarey’s Duck Soup (Matters of state, domestic and foreign, fall into the hands of known Marxists — Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo.); Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (In which Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe learn that “Nobody’s perfect.”); Peter Chelsom’s overlooked homage to comedy, Funny Bones.

I could go on and on. Check out my tags for some more stuff that keeps me laughing.

I can always add The Princess Bride, Putney Swope, Office Space, Repo Man and The Big Lebowski to the list along with a few from Woody Allen…
